Boren Awards for International Language Study 2025 

General Information:  

The Boren Awards, sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO), support U.S. citizens studying critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Swahili. These awards encourage students to immerse themselves in underrepresented cultures while preparing for careers in public service related to U.S. national security.

Date: Applications are now open

Deadline:  

  • Boren Fellowships (graduate students): January 22, 2025  
  • Boren Scholarships (undergraduate students): January 29, 2025 

Benefits:  

  • Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks abroad for both undergraduate and graduate students  
  • $12,500 for 12-24 weeks  
  • $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)  
  • $5,000 for optional domestic language study (graduate students)

Requirements:  

  • U.S. citizenship at the time of application  
  • Enrollment in an accredited U.S. undergraduate or graduate degree program  
  • Minimum age of 18 at the time of application  
  • Plans to study in a foreign location where the applicant is not a citizen  
  • ROTC cadets and military members must be in inactive, non-drilling status

How to Apply:  

  • Write 02 essays: 01 discussing the relevance of the proposed language and country to U.S. national security and 01 outlining personal motivations and career goals  
  • Submit applications by the respective deadlines for fellowships or scholarships
