The program was established in 2000 through a donation from Bill and Melinda Gates to the University of Cambridge, UK. The scholarship is available for the majority of postgraduate and PhD programs offered at the university. The program is highly challenging and competitive.
The benefits of the scholarship
The scholarship covers the following:
- Tuition fees
- A monthly allowance totaling £21,000 per year (for PhD candidates, the award is available for up to four years)
- The cost of an economy air ticket
- Visa fees
- Health insurance
- Dependent children allowance
- Maternity/Paternity allowance
- Conferences and courses funding
- Other benefits
Requirements
The general requirements of the program are as follows:
- Applicants from all over the world, except UK nationals, are eligible to apply.
- Applicants must have outstanding academic skills and grades.
- Applicants must apply to one of the following programs at the university:
- PhD (full-time or part-time*)
- MLitt (full-time)
- One-year postgraduate course (full-time), with some exceptions
